Huang and Miedlar Elected Officers at SIAM


LAWRENCE - Two members of the University of Kansas Department of Mathematics were elected officers in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

Weizhang Huang, professor of mathematics and department chair, was elected president to the "Weizhang Huang"Central States Section.

Agneiszka Miedlar, associate professor of mathematics, was elected program director for the SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra. Huang will serve a two-year term and Miedlar will serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2022.

The central states section serves SIAM members in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi,"Agneiszka Miedlar"Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The purpose of this section is to enhance the communication among the section members, promote the collaboration for both basic research and applications of mathematics to industry and science, represent applied and computational mathematics in the entire central region, and support the SIAM mission in the central region of the United States. Participation in SIAM Central States Section activities are open to all institutions and industries in the region with an interest in applied and computational mathematics. The KU Department of Mathematics hosted the central states regional meeting in October 2021.

The activity group provides a more focused forum for research in linear algebra and its applications. The group organizes conferences and supports smaller, less formal meetings as requested by the membership.
