Scholarships


The following scholarships and scholarship funds have been established by friends and alumni of the University of Kansas. In each case, a scholarship is awarded on merit and its stipend is determined by need. 

CHARLES H. ASHTON SCHOLARSHIP 

This scholarship fund was established in 1947 in memory of Professor Ashton by a gift from his family and friends.  The fund was increased in 1970 by a gift from members of Professor Ashton’s family.  Professor Ashton was a member of the Department of Mathematics from 1903 to 1936 and was the Chairman from 1918 to 1931. 

ROGER AND VICKI BERGER SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2019 by Roger and Vicki Berger to provide funds for students majoring in mathematics.  Dr. Berger received a B.A. in mathematics from KU in 1973 and M.S. and Ph.D. in statistics from Purdue University.  He is professor emeritus at Arizona State University.

FLORENCE BLACK SCHOLARSHIP

The Florence Black Scholarship was established in 1974 by friends and colleagues of Professor Black.  Professor Black earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics at the University of Kansas and was a member of the faculty from 1918 until her retirement in 1960.

WEALTHY BABCOCK SCHOLARSHIP 

The Wealthy Babcock Scholarship was established in 1980 by Martha Peterson.  Professor Babcock earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics at the University of Kansas and was a member of the faculty from 1926 until her retirement in 1966.  Martha Peterson was a prominent educator who received all her degrees from KU:  B.A. 1937, M.A. in Mathematics 1943, Ph.D. in Education 1959.  She was president of both Barnard and Beloit colleges, retiring from the latter in 1981.

BLACK-BABCOCK SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship fund was established in 1990 by a bequest from Professors Florence Black and Wealthy Babcock. 

PAUL F. CONRAD GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

This award was established in 2008 in memory of Professor Conrad by gifts from his family and friends to provide awards for deserving graduate students in mathematics.  In 1981, Conrad was named the first Henry J. Bischoff Professor of Mathematics at KU.  He retired in 1992.

CHARLES HOBBS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship fund was established in 1954 in memory of Charles Hobbs by a gift from his sister, Helen Hobbs.  Mr. Hobbs was a graduate of the University of Kansas and a former Commissioner of Insurance for the State of Kansas.  

JOAN KIRKHAM MATHEMATICS OPPORTUNITY FUND

This fund was established in 2002 by a gift from Joan Kirkham to provide unrestricted opportunities within the Mathematics Department.  One of the uses is to provide travel funds to graduate students to attend conferences/workshops in their research areas.

JOAN KIRKHAM SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS

This scholarship was established in 2002 by a gift from Joan Kirkham to provide scholarships for deserving female students in the Department of Mathematics.  Joan Kirkham received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from KU in 1948.

EDITH S. KORNBLEET MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1995 in memory of Edith S. Kornbleet by a gift from her family.  Mrs. Kornbleet graduated from KU in 1923.  She taught mathematics for many years for Argentine High School and for the Kansas City, Kansas School District.

MAY LANDIS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1958 in memory of May Landis by a bequest from her brother, Paul Landis.  The fund to support these scholarships was greatly increased in 1963 by a bequest from her sister, Maude Landis.  May Landis was a high school mathematics teacher in Leavenworth and in Kansas City.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by friends and alumni of the Mathematics Department to recognize outstanding student achievement in mathematics.

PAUL J. MCCARTHY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2019 by Carl Taylor to provide support to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in mathematics.  Paul McCarthy was a professor in the mathematics department from 1961 to 1993.  Carl Taylor received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1972 under the direction of McCarthy.

U.G. MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIP

The first U. G. Mitchell Scholarship was established by the Department of Mathematics upon the retirement of Professor U. G. Mitchell as its chairman.  Professor Mitchell was on the faculty of the Department from 1906 to 1942. Professor Mitchell was Chairman from 1931 to 1941.  These scholarships are continued by a bequest from his wife.

RASHLEIGH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND IN MATH

This fund was established in 2017.  Perry L. Rashleigh, MD, graduated from KU in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, and went on to earn a degree in Medicine from KU in 1960.  Perry's wife Rosemary graduated from KU in 1959, where she majored in Mathematics and English. In 1965, Perry pursued a post-doctorate degree in dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  In 1969, he joined another physician in Western Colorado, and subsequently spent 40 years practicing dermatology in Grand Junction, Colorado.

T.P. AND SAROJA SRINIVASAN MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP

This fundwas established in 2012 by their children, Srinija, Srija and Srikanth, to provide undergraduate scholarships in mathematics.  T.P. Srinivasan was a professor of mathematics at KU from 1968 to 2000.

FRED S. VAN VLECK FAMILY MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP

This fund was established in 2018 by the family of Fred Van Vleck to provide scholarships for undergraduate students in mathematics.  Fred was a professor of mathematics at KU from 1962 to 2004.  In 1985, he was named Chancellor’s Club Teaching Professor, a position he held until his retirement.  He served as Director/Co-director of the Kansas Mathematics Workshops for Secondary School Teachers from 1989-1999.  His son Erik is currently a professor in the math department.

ROLLIN STERLING WADE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1964 in memory of Rollin Sterling Wade by a gift from his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Wade are graduates of the University of Kansas and their son was a student at the University of Kansas.  

ELBERT WALKER SCHOLARSHIP

This fund was established in 2002 by a gift from Elbert and Carol Walker in honor of G. Baley Price.  Elbert Walker received his Ph.D. in mathematics from KU in 1955.

ALBERT F. AND BARBARA KILE ZERNICKOW MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP 

This fund was established in 1985 by Barbara Kile Zernickow (now Barbara Kile Wheat) (BA 1945, MEd 1949) to provide scholarships for deserving students in mathematics.  The fund is named after her husband Albert (BS 1949 Engineering) and herself.
