Undergraduate Scholarships
Academic Year Scholarship
These are competitive scholarships available to math majors and non-majors with a strong concentration in math classes that are currently enrolled at KU. All scholarships are based on merit. However some funds have restrictions based on level, major, gender, residency and financial need. The scholarship award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters.
The Mathematics Department awards over $80,000 each year in scholarships. The award amounts vary depending on the number of awards made, type of award, and level of scholarship. Part of these funds are used to support KU's renewable scholarships.
These scholarships have been made possible through private donors who include alumni, friends and family of the Mathematics Department. Scholarship funds are managed by the KU Endowment Association on behalf of these generous donors. Recipients are recognized at the department's annual honors banquet in April.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be currently enrolled in or have completed MATH 126/146.
- Must plan to take junior-senior level math courses.
- Must have a GPA of at least 3.5 in KU math classes.
Deadline
March 1: Applications will be accepted between February 14-March 1. The academic year scholarship award is divided between the fall and spring semesters.
Important:
To be considered for a financial need-based scholarship, students must fill out a FAFSA (for U.S. citizens) or an ISNAW (for international students). Please note the FAFSA will not be available until January 1. You may apply for a PIN before then. The FAFSA/ISNAW must be completed one month before the scholarship deadlines. We strongly recommended that all applicants complete either the FAFSA or ISNAW.
For math majors who have a KU four-year renewable scholarship, their junior and senior years are covered by scholarship funds from the Mathematics Department. The award funds will go to KU to help pay for your four-year scholarship and will be applied to your university bill. If there is a remaining balance, you will receive a check for the difference. The total annual value of your four year renewable scholarship will not change. You do not need to fill out a scholarship application to receive these funds.
