Title: Optimizing Defensive Strategies in Invasion Team Sports
Abstract:Statistical analysis has been applied to team sports for decades in an attempt to gain an advantage, and baseball has most notably used the information to identify successful defensive strategies. However statistics, data mining of observational data, and computational modeling have given little advantage to other sports. This talk and discussion presents a novel approach to sports analytics, where strategies are created using optimization techniques to represent not only the tendencies of the offense, but their reactions to defensive changes. I will present a framework for the design of strategy in an arbitrary invasion team sport, and then show an example of the framework applied to ultimate frisbee. I hope to demonstrate an interesting and tangible application for mathematics and to generate a discussion on the improvements and applications of my model.
