Linear Algebra

590

Vector spaces, linear transformations, and matrices. Canonical forms. Determinants. Eigenvectors and eigenvalues.

Text:

Linear Algebra, Friedberg Insel Spence, 4th edition, Prentice Hall, 2003.

Prerequisite:

MATH 127 or MATH 147 or MATH 223 or MATH 243, and MATH 290 or MATH 291. Not open to students with credit in MATH 792.

Credit Hours:
3

TOPICS

  1. Vector spaces
  2. Linear Transformations and Matrices
  3. Elementary Matrix Operations and Systems of Linear Equations
  4. Determinants
  5. Diagonalization
  6. Inner Product Spaces
  7. Canonical Forms

The MATH 127 and MATH 290 prerequisite implies that students should be familiar with the basic properties of matrices and determinants. It should not be necessary to spend much time on reviewing these topics. Use of a graphing calculator is strongly encouraged.
