Gateway: Exam Overview

The Gateway Exam is a test of skills that are important to the math class you are taking. There are three steps to complete:

  1. Use your KU Online ID to login to Maple TA.
  2. Pass an Online Exam at home (or from any computer with internet access) to show that you have learned how to use the system and have practiced the required skills. (If you are enrolled in Math 115 for the Fall or Spring you have an extra step.)
  3. Pass an In-Lab Exam in the Gateway Lab.

To pass each exam, you need to get 8 questions out of 10 right. There are deadlines for each step, but you can take each exam as many times as you need to before that deadline. You need to do all three steps to get full credit for the Gateway Exam. See the Points section on the main page to find the point values for your course. In particular, you need to pass the Online Exam to be allowed to take the In-Lab Exam. Be sure to start early so you don't run out of time!

The Gateway Exam has two goals: to test a particular skill from the course you are taking, and to have you begin to interact successfully with computers in a mathematical way. Both parts are important, so be sure to practice interacting with the Maple TA system as well as your math skills.

There is a lot of information you will need in this guide -- please read it so you will know what's going on. If you need help at any point in the process, you can get in touch with the Gateway Team at gateway-help@math.ku.edu. Tell us your name, your KU ID#, and your problem or question. Please get in touch with us as soon as you have problems -- we can find solutions for any issue you might be having, but you have to tell us about it. Once a deadline has passed there's very little we can do, so talk to us early!

The Gateway Team sends out a small number of email reminders throughout the course of the semester. Make sure you check your registered KU email account regularly.

Good luck!
